The Future of Cancer Innovation and Care

Our Vision for a Stanford Medicine Cancer Center in Redwood City

Stanford Medicine is exploring the possibility of establishing a cancer center in Redwood City. While early in our process, we have a clear vision to guide our planning and ensure our efforts focus on:

  • Driving Discovery: Build on Stanford’s history of delivering “firsts” and set a new global standard for cancer research, breakthroughs, and education.
  • Connecting Innovators: Expand our capacity for innovation and share our cancer expertise across our care network and with colleagues around the world.
  • Educating Future Leaders: Integrate research, care, and education for the next generation of cancer doctors and scientists.
  • Transforming Treatment: Deliver world-class research with exceptional patient care in a single, patient-oriented setting from prevention through survivorship.
  • Expanding Care: Grow our capacity to expand access to innovative care and clinical trials for patients and communities.
  • Aligning on Shared Community Values: Strengthen our long and collaborative relationship with our neighbors and the region to promote a healthy community and foster environmental stewardship.

Engaging with the Redwood City Community

Stanford Medicine looks forward to collaborating with the Redwood City community to begin shaping the development of a Cancer Center that meets the community's needs, improves health outcomes, and enhances quality of life.

Stanford Medicine Cancer Center

Stanford Medicine has a bold vision to confront cancer: the creation of a next-generation center in Redwood City that intentionally co-locates research and patient care to accelerate discovery and transform cancer care.

Cancer affects every community. Here in San Mateo County, the impact is both immediate and deeply personal. This year alone, 3,750 residents will receive a new cancer diagnosis, while 1 in 16 adult residents (6.3%) continues a cancer journey. This local reality reflects broader national and global trends. The American Cancer Society estimates 2.1 million Americans will receive a cancer diagnosis in 2026 and 626,000 will die from the disease. By 2050, there will be more than 35 million new cancer cases globally—a 77% increase from 2022.

Stanford Medicine is committed to meeting this urgent need head-on, as demand for our world-class cancer care is projected to double over the next decade.

Our legacy of innovation includes numerous breakthroughs that have redefined the standard of cancer care. For patients, these advances translate into meaningful, life-changing outcomes, including fewer invasive surgeries, better control of pain and symptoms, less time receiving care, and long-term survival or cures.

We are determined to identify new methods for predicting, preventing, and curing cancer. Innovation is at the heart of Stanford Medicine. With deep connections to Stanford University’s unparalleled multidisciplinary expertise, we are uniquely positioned to lead the future of cancer care. Through clinics across the Bay Area and collaborations with regional Federally Qualified Health Centers, Stanford-born innovations reach the community we proudly serve, should they ever need them.

A new cancer center in Redwood City would enable Stanford Medicine to continue revolutionizing the field by bridging innovative research with high-touch, personalized patient care on an integrated campus. This unified epicenter for cancer innovation would rapidly move discoveries from research labs to patients’ bedsides and would use what doctors learn to guide further research. This cycle of innovation would have benefits beyond Stanford, supporting patients wherever they receive care.

Conceptual Site Plan

Stanford Medicine is pleased to present our most up-to-date conceptual site maps for our community to share in the vision of the cancer center. These maps and vignettes were displayed at the February community open houses and have incorporated feedback received at the October 2025 open houses and community meetings.
